Ashes of Creation Apocalypse battle royale (also referred to BR mode)[5] was a Battle royale testing mode consisting of up to 100 players.[6][7]
- This is a last man standing PvP combat mode.[8]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse lore
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse lore takes place during the exodus from Verra.[11][12][13]
- Some unlucky citizens didn't quite make it through the gateways in time and fell back to the planet to fight for survival.[11] This underpins the battle royale mode.[12]
- Certain citizens are fighting for control over Castles that they believe to be last bastions of defense against the forces of corruption. This underpins the castle siege mode.[12]
- The last stand against the forces of corruption takes place in the horde mode.[12]
Initially you're playing the Battle Royale you're a part of the last group of survivors to try to leave Verra. And as you're leaving you get cut off. The slipstream ends and you start falling back to the planet. Now the activities that occur and the fighting amongst yourselves is a result of the influence of corruption: Corrupting your soul basically; and as we move into the Castle Siege mode that's where you see the survivors now trying to seek refuge in some of the last defendable bastions of of society. So you're fighting over those for your families and your friends to get into that keep to try to ride out the storm so to say; and that's what the Castle Siege is predicated on. Then moving into the Hordes is this is now the final showdown. How long can you last? And that's the narrative behind Apocalypse as a whole.[14] – Steven Sharif
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse lore is split into chapters.[14]
- Chapter 1 is called The Exodus. It takes part in the initial stages of the fall and sets the scene for upcoming chapters.[14]
What happened before you came back? What did your ancestors have to go through? What did these civilizations have to endure? ... You get to experience the world of Ashes of Creation. You get to take a peek under the hood of the art assets and the style that that art will be when you play the game; and at the same time while you're doing all of that and we're hitting the servers with as many people as possible, we are continuing production and implementing new art; and we are updating those those chapters of this story; and that's what each season so speak is called for us is a chapter. In fact the first chapter of Apocalypse will be titled the Exodus. So chapter one is the Exodus and players will have an opportunity to earn unique rewards in each chapter. So that chapter's period of time is roughly ten weeks- between eight and twelve. We'll see how those go, but right now it's set for ten weeks; and every ten weeks you're going to see an introduction of new content.[14] – Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse combat
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse combat targeting
Action combat in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse utilizes a targeting reticle.[17]
- A hot key can be used to toggle reticle mode on and off.[17]
- Left mouse click is used for basic weapon attacks.[18]
- Right mouse click is used as a "focus" button. It can also be used to activate root motion attacks for melee.[18]
- Combat targeting uses hitbox registration in three separate regions: Upper body, lower body and head.[19]
- Certain weapons and skills have ADS (Aim Down Sights) functionality.[20][21]
There will be aim down sights. You may have seen it that you can aim down sights on weapons; and there will be scopes on like crossbows and stuff that - arcane scopes - that you can use.[20] – Steven Sharif
Some spells do have ADS. There's a long-range meteor blast that can be used from one of the spell books; and that has an arcane zoom in. It lets you zoom into a target.[21] – Steven Sharif
Alpha-1 will test hybrid action/tab combat.[22][23]
Time-to-kill

- Previously it was stated that the TTK was expected to be around 30 seconds to a minute.[26]
- The developers do not want one-shots in the final MMORPG.[27]
- Average non-elite mob time-to-kill for a solo player is intended to be around 6 seconds.[28]
- In the MMORPG we really don't want to see any one-shots. The time-to-kill needs to be strategic and tactical.[27] – Steven Sharif

爆頭機制 (where there is a specific hitbox for a player's head) are not planned for the Ashes of Creation MMORPG.[29][30][31]
- Headshots were a part of Ashes of Creation Apocalypse battle royale.[31]
- Previously it was stated that headshot mechanics may be implemented in the MMORPG along the lines of a higher critical chance[32][33] and that they would not be one hit kills.[32]
- Headshots in action combat are equivalent to a critical hit in tab targeted combat.[34]
- Players relying on tab skills will have a fixed critical hit chance every time they use an ability or weapon.[34]
- Players using action-based skills are going to rely on getting a head shot or hitting a critical spot on the opponent.[34]
- A Ranger skill called Headshot was introduced leading up to Alpha-2 testing.[35]
Weapon and armor skills

- Swapping between weapons will allow players to access the different skills on their hotbar.[36]
- Certain armor pieces have utility and defensive skills, such as like Camouflage, Polymorph and Battlefield wall.[36]
- Weapons are tied to one specific skill in early testing, but this may change.[37]
Weapons will have skills associated with them and they'll will rest on a hot bar and you can swap between the weapons on the hot bar and that'll allow you to access the different skills. Additionally the breastplate, the leggings: Those also have skills associated with them those are more utility and defensive abilities, such as like camouflage, polymorph, battlefield wall; that stuff. Those are on the armor pieces and then they are associated with right now the VC hotkeys for their abilities.[36] – Steven Sharif
Right now weapons are tied to one specific skill; and that's just again because we're so early in alpha 1; but well probably be changing that as we continue to iterate and test.[36] – Steven Sharif

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse active blocking
主動格擋 is a universal skill that applies to all classes.[43][44][45][46][41][47]
- Active blocking is present in Alpha-2.[46][40][42] At present the developers are using a universal stamina-based energy system, but they will be testing the use of separate energy mechanics for universal skills in Alpha-2.[44][46][48][49][42]
- Active blocking might be an ability that- it's universal, of course it's universal- but it might be consuming mana; and you'll be able to adjust that mana consumption based off of your passive spec into your skill trees. In addition, it might also consume stamina, where that's something we're going to be testing as part of Alpha-2.[46] – Steven Sharif
- Different types of equipment are catered toward blocking different damage types.[43]
- Shields are better for active blocking physical damage, but any melee weapon can also be used to parry with a lesser amount of mitigation.[45][41]
- Sigils are better at actively blocking magical damage.[43]
- Q: How are you designing encounters around active blocking? Will it be situational use, or would I expect to be laying on my block keybind for most of the fight to prevent getting deleted by bosses?
- A: It depends really on the type of adversary you're facing. Some of them are going to have indicators or tells that a big attack is coming. It's an animation wind up where you'll have an opportunity to use active block in very unique situations that are based on timing and additional mitigation for those incoming one-off attacks. In other occasions you'll be able to use it off of rotational cooldowns, or if you're waiting for a particular ability or you're during the use of your Aegis. There's different situations for when active block is a relevant use-case.[50] – Steven Sharif
- Some abilities may be able to overcome, surpass, or cancel active blocking.[44]
- If a player is in a state, such as an active block, or an active tumble state, there will likely be some types of abilities that interact with reacting to those types of states and will either overcome surpass or cancel out those states, particularly as it relates to not just active blocking, but also potentially passive blocking as well; and that would be something probably related to physical penetration values as a stat, or even CC breaks that could be relevant as well for those types of things. I think that's on the radar for the combat team.[44] – Steven Sharif
- Previously the developers had not finalized designs for active blocking and were leaning toward using more traditional buff-oriented universal damage mitigation for the MMO, and were also considering interaction between action-based blocking and a passive block stat.[51][52]
- The Paladin's Might shield in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse had its own hit box and hit points (HP); that could actively block projectiles.[53]
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse armor
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse armor comes with associated skills/abilities.[11] There are two types of armor: Upper and lower body.[55]

装甲 grants damage mitigation.[11]
- In Ashes of Creation Apocalypse battle royale armor that has lost its damage mitigation can be recharged/repaired to restore damage mitigation points.[11]
- In Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle sieges armor can be replenished by an Engineer. There may also be items in the world or objectives that replenish armor for the entire team, such as one of the buffs for taking a control point.[56]
- In Ashes of Creation (the MMORPG) armor does not function as a pool. There will be no armor bar as seen in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse.[56]
What you're seeing currently in the Battle Royale feature of Apocalypse is you find armor and that gives you an armor pool and then you can regenerate your armor. What we're going to be experiencing in the castle siege form is each class will have a set amount of armor that they join the match with that's already full and a set amount of health that's already full. Upon losing armor you can either have your armor replenished by an Engineer or there there may be ability for you to find items that are in the world or there could be objectives that replenish armor for the entire team, such as one of the buffs for taking a control point.[56] – Steven Sharif

Alpha-1 modular armor
Your base look for the character can be pretty boring, but what Steven gave us a challenge with from day one was to make sure even the base look, the t-shirt and pants, looked amazing... This is your zero character, if you will... Then you can go in and customize everything from the shoulder pads to the elbow pads, the belt that goes around them; do you want duel belts, you want to harness the clothes in the front. So every piece you see on here you can actually customize that at the front end. So what we do is we scale that up from zero, ten and twenty... We scale it up and we customize it; and then I want to really stress that each one of those looks as you progress is different. We're not just repurposing the same armor pieces. We're making unique sets that complement each other as you progress.[57] – Mat Broome
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse will have three different armor themes: Plate, leather and robe.[58]
You can actually have three different types of themes: You have plate, you'll have leather and you'll have robe. So for every armor set that we're showing at each one of those tiers, you're actually gonna have nine unique looks to pick from.[58] – Mat Broome

While we will have specific spot tests for certain systems as we develop them post the Alpha one month, it should be expected and understood that after this Alpha one month there will be probably a significant amount of downtime where there won't be spot testing as we break apart a lot of systems, take what we learned from alpha one month and implement and iterate upon those learnings. The term "alpha" is a tricky one, and it typically has 2 meanings in gaming. The development meaning for alpha is a point in the process where we are ready to test the fundamental systems in their core form, without polish and without much of the content. Then, there is the external or "marketing" term for alpha. This is typically applied to Eastern-ported MMORPGs, when in fact that is a completed game being localized for a region, and not really indicative of a true development alpha. As you may know by now, game development has many stages - from the initial tech demos to the pre-production and pre-alpha states, then on to the alphas and betas and eventually launch.[67] – Steven Sharif
I want to make emphatically clear, our alphas and betas are true development alphas and betas, and some have said I am crazy to allow these phases to be seen without an NDA…maybe I am crazy? lol… But I am trusting the community of gamers out there to get a glimpse into the process, and understand the long road ahead for what will eventually be worth the wait. Given time and talent, amazing things can happen, so make sure you help us in communicating that we are in open development which means people get to see the bare bones before the meat. Group sizes in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse.[76]
- Ashes of Creation Apocalypse battle royale will have party sizes of up to 5.[76]
- Guild mode will have parties of raids of up to 20.[76]
- Ashes of Creation Apocalypse castle sieges will have parties of 5 within a raid, with 5 raids for each of the two teams.[76]
- Ashes of Creation Apocalypse horde mode will have a party size of 5 with a total of ten groups, making for 50 players.[76]

- The weekend test of May 27, 2021 saw 5,300 unique logins over the 3 day period.[104]
There were roughly 9600 if I recall A1 participants prior to my closing the preorder packs in 2018. Since opening them up again there have been just under 5k additional participants added. And prolly around 300 refunds give or take. Of the roughly 14,000 a1 testers, there are still about 1k unredeemed ks codes which leaves a little over 13k testers? Alpha-1 NDA
Alpha-1, Alpha-2, Beta-1, Beta-2 releases are not covered by 保密協議 (non-disclosure agreement).[106]
- Alpha-2 testing prior to the full release of Alpha-2 will be under NDA.[107]

- The developers will not necessarily announce when NDA testing starts.[109]
